I'm still speculating a ton of scratches in this event (22 of the top 42 are scratches for me as of now), but that could end up being a little bold. Rusty Kujdych is really starting to look like he may try out the mile-3k double. A 4:15 performance against a defending medalist in Addison is really impressive and makes me a dark horse title contender (although with Hoey and Hengst potentially in the race, that gets more complicated).

This race could be incredibly deep if people choose to focus on it. The top 5 guys in the standings are awesome. Cullen, Eissler, Jonah Hoey, Wirth and Smucker are all gamers who have either state medals or state finals appearances on the track. Wirth is the real wildcard considering how strong his XC season was. The other four names are probably going to focus on other events (although maybe Jonah will surprise and opt for something else).

There's a nice tier of 4:30ish guys developing now with Tomov, Zach Smith, Charlie Herrmann and Sam Earley all in there and looking like potential medal worthy sleepers. As of now Tomov would make the fast heat if the scratches play out as I speculate they will.

I would really like to see Jack Miller get into this field. His current time in all likelihood won't do the trick, but the kid is a gamer who showed some monster speed at Ocean Breeze this weekend. I'd be interested to see him in a 3k, although 3k qualifying is trickier in a small field with not as many scratches.
